Dragging suitcases through airports, fighting long lines, listening to screaming kids ask, “Are we there yet?,” battling traffic jams… Hmmm, does any of that sound like fun? After all, those are all things that happen when going on vacation! While those are the necessary evils, how would you like to have a little fun, while avoiding those headaches? How about a STAY-cation? Charlotte and the surrounding area has so much to offer; from day trips to culinary experiences. There are so many things to do around here that it is hard to list them all, but here are a few highlights.

A day trip to the Biltmore House is a great family-friendly outing. The holidays are an especially great time to go. The Christmas decorations are amazing, including a replica of the house made out of gingerbread!!

Local wineries are another great day trip for a couple’s retreat or even a fun girl getaway. Childress Vineyards is less than two hours from Charlotte. It is a stunning Italian Renaissance stone and stucco winery started by NASCAR legend, Richard Childress.

The culinary experience in Charlotte is endless. JLC member Alston Robertson has several recommendations to satisfy your hungry belly. “For the best Italian meal, you cannot miss Portofino’s. Just visiting their website will make your mouth water. American Roadside is a great place for the entire family. Mom and Dad can get a great tasting, healthy salad and glass of wine, while the kids can indulge in burgers, fries, and shakes. Warning, if you sneak a taste of your child’s milkshake, you may become addicted! For a girl’s night out, AZN Azian Cuizine is a hot spot. Delicious sushi and an extensive wine list will tempt your palate.”

When mentioning stay-cations, JLC member JoEl Knight says, “You cannot miss the arts that abound in Charlotte. In February, Victor Hugo’s famous novel, Les Miserables comes alive on stage at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. What a great date night! Tickets are still available online.”

JoEl also suggests a “Mommy and Me” night out.

“Get a room at the Westin where you can swim and play, and then go see Taylor Swift in concert,” she says.

She will be hitting the stage March 22, 2013 at Time Warner Cable Arena.
