The JLC Mentor Program-A Great Experience!

“When I registered for the JLC Mentoring Program I honestly did not know what to expect. However, I must say it was one of the best decisions I have made. As my first active year in the league; I desired to learn more about JLC and how I could actively contribute to the mission and goals of the organization. The JLC Mentoring Program committee did an amazing job of pairing me with the best mentor, Lisa L. Johnson. Lisa not only helped me identify how my skills can help contribute to the initiatives of JLC, but she also has helped me establish professional development goals. I am currently working on my Masters in Mental Health Counseling. Lisa is the founder and Executive Director of S.T.E.P’s  (Success Through Experience and Play) Developmental Academy. The academy assists children with developmental disabilities and their families achieve the most out of life. The academy also has a mental health component that helps clients achieve their full potential and improve the quality of their lives. Her knowledge and expertise has helped better my understanding of the mental health field as well as helped in my personal life. My younger brother has Autism. Lisa provided me with many recommendations that helped my family better understand his strengths and areas of need. I am forever thankful to the JLC Mentoring Program Committee for the excellent job in matching me with the perfect mentor. Lisa has helped me polish my leadership skills to serve the league effectively, offered an everlasting friendship, helped with my personal and professional development, and continues to provide me with ongoing support. Thank you JLC Mentoring Program!!!” – LaToya Lowery, Vice-Chair of Training and Development Committee

“When the 2013-2014 JLC Mentoring Program chair contacted me about serving as a mentor,  I had know idea how this program would impact my life.  I was paired with an amazing first year active who truly embraces the JLC’s mission.  Just a few minutes into my conversation with Latoya Lowery, I knew immediately that her passion was for bettering the community.  During our first meeting, while enjoying mani/pedi’s, LaToya and I hit it off immediately.  We found that our back grounds and upbringings were very similar. We shared laughs and a great conversation.  I knew immediately that she would be a life-long friend.  Since our initial meeting, we have met to discuss everything from League goals, career goals, and to just chat about life.  It feels like LaToya has become a part of my family as she has shared several meals with my family and friends.   If I ever need a good laugh, I know who to call.  LaToya has the best sense of humor.  Thank you to the JLC Mentor Program for pairing us!” –Lisa L. Johnson, President-Elect
