IMPACT is defined as having a strong effect on someone or something. What a fitting definition for the journey I have had since becoming a part of Junior League of Charlotte and the Leadership Development Institute (LDI).
The Leadership Development Institute is a year-long seminar series that connects participants with League and community leaders to discuss topics relevant to careers, volunteerism and personal leadership.
During my first active year in the Junior League of Charlotte, I was on the LDI committee and bonded with six beautiful woman. One of the woman I encountered was Hannah Beavers. We connected over our love for philanthropy (and probably because we are really tall! LOL). At that time, I was walking in fear about parting ways from my corporate America job, and Hannah identified with each emotion I was having. She told me about an amazing fellowship opportunity with her organization, Mama Hope, and the rest is history.
In one year, I parted ways with the corporate world, became the first US-based Global Advocate fellow, raised over $20k for the youth entrepreneurship program I implemented in the Grier Heights community, and was named one of the Seven to Watch in 2017 in the Charlotte Observer. The best part about it all, is that Hannah has taken each impactful step with me. I always joke that she pushed me out the plane with no parachute. In this big life change, I experienced a variety of different tests, questioned myself and my circumstances many times, and cried at least twice a month, but I am now stronger in my purpose. Clearly, the connection I made in LDI profoundly changed my life.
I believe that all the stars align when God places amazing people and opportunities in front of you. For me, this happened when I joined the Leadership Development Institute committee. I am now the Chair for LDI, and I can’t begin to tell you how impactful it has been on my life. From each committee member who has shared her talents, to each speaker who has empowered and impacted each workshop participant, to the amazing leadership from previous chairs, Whitney and DeOnn, this JLC committee has changed me beyond any definition of impact. I cannot wait to see what IMPACT manifests this upcoming year, and I am so grateful to be not only a part, but also a witness.
