Reflections: Why I Became A Provisional Advisor

In 2014 I relocated to Charlotte and did not have many friends in the area. I wanted to feel more connected to the city, so I joined the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) in 2015. Sitting at my provisional kick-off, all I could think was, “How am I going to get through all these requirements?” I was overwhelmed. In a room full of like-minded women, I felt alone. But then I remembered that I would be placed in a small group of women that lived close to me, and that relieved some of my concerns. After my first small group meeting, I knew I had made a great decision in joining the JLC!

Being a member of that group I believe lead to my success as a provisional. When I received the opportunity to be a Provisional Advisor and have a small group of my own, I could not turn it down! As a Provisional Advisor, you are able to shape the first experiences that women have with the JLC. We create community and space where women of diverse backgrounds can build friendships that last a lifetime. I wanted my Provisionals to have the same amazing experience I had. Keeping track of 15 women is not an easy task, however, it was thoroughly rewarding. If I had to do it all over again, I would.  I was able to see women step out of their comfort zone and blossom in this organization. The mission of the JLC is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community – I was able to live this out as a Provisional Advisor.
